Winter Fishing on Lewis Smith Lake

January 15, 2024

Lewis Smith Lake, Alabama — early morning on the water

Most anglers put the rods away when November turns cold. That means Smith Lake is quieter in winter than at any other time of year — and for the anglers willing to layer up and go, it can produce some of the most memorable fishing of the year.

Why Winter Works at Smith Lake

Smith Lake's exceptional depth is a major factor. While shallower lakes see fish completely shut down, Smith Lake's deepest zones — 60-to-100-plus feet near the dam — maintain relatively stable temperatures. Stripers and large spotted bass use that deep water as a refuge and concentrate there in predictable numbers. Fewer boats means fish have recovered from fall pressure.

Striper Fishing: Winter's Best Show

Winter is the premier striper season at Lewis Smith Lake. From December through February, stripers pack into the deepest water near the dam, following shad in 40–80 feet. Vertical jigging with blade baits or heavy jigging spoons is the standard approach. Position your boat directly over the school you're seeing on sonar. Drop a 3/4-oz Silver Buddy or Hopkins jigging spoon, snap it up 2–3 feet, let it flutter back down. The strike usually happens on the fall.

Spotted Bass in Winter

Big spotted bass don't stop feeding in winter — they just slow down and go deep. Everything slows down in 50°F water. A shaky head jig needs to be barely moved in January — crawl it along the bottom, shake it in place, and be patient. Football jigs (3/8-to-1/2 oz) worked along deep rocky ledges are a classic winter spotted bass technique.

Reading the Winter Drawdown

Alabama Power typically draws the lake down in late fall. The good news: drawdown concentrates fish. Less water means fish have less area to roam. Find the remaining water adjacent to structure and you'll find fish. See the water levels page for current elevation data.
