Smith Lake Fishing Report: Spring
April 1, 2024
Spring at Lewis Smith Lake arrives gradually but unmistakably. When the redbuds bloom along the bluffs and water temperature climbs through the 50s, every species on the lake responds. This is the season regulars plan their trips around.
Water Temperature is Everything
Spring fishing at Smith Lake is governed by water temperature more than any other variable. At 55–62°F, prespawn feeding peaks — spotted bass stack on transition banks adjacent to spawning flats. At 62–68°F, spawn begins and both bass and crappie move shallow. At 68°F+, post-spawn begins but fish remain relatively catchable.
Spotted Bass: Prespawn is Prime
The prespawn period — typically late March through mid-April — is the best spotted bass fishing of the year at Smith Lake. Fish are concentrated, accessible, and aggressive. Look for transition banks connecting 15-foot flats to 5-foot spawning areas, and rocky points where the bank transitions from deep to shallow. Drop shots, shaky heads, and small swimbaits on 6–8 lb fluorocarbon are the go-to presentations.
Crappie: Best Access of the Year
By mid-April, crappie are on their spawn throughout Smith Lake's coves and dock structures. Work docks systematically with a 1/16-oz tube jig or live minnow under a slip float. Brushy coves throughout the north arm — particularly in Clear Creek and Brushy Creek tributaries — hold excellent crappie spawns. Get there early before post-10am boat traffic pushes fish off their beds.
Stripers in Spring
Spring striper fishing transitions from tight winter schools to more spread-out fish following shad into creek arms and tributary mouths. Trolling or casting large swimbaits near creek mouths and main lake channel transitions is the primary spring striper approach.
